Last week, there was a huge mess in the media about Actor Idris Elba possibly playing James Bond in an upcoming movie. Many people have very strong opinions one way or the other, names were called, the race card was thrown, it was annoying to listen to.

Anthony Horowitz, the author of the most recent Bond novel: “Trigger Mortis” was quoted as saying Mr. Elba was “Too Street” to play the suave Mr. Bond. This raised all sorts of annoying responses, but Mr. Elba handled it with amazing style.

However, even if I do love Idris Elba in almost everything I’ve ever seen him in, I don’t think he’d make a good James Bond. He’s a fantastic actor, but he’s just too passionate. Every character I’ve ever seen him play has been passionate, full of life and vigor. Even if it’s a repressed fury or greed, it’s still there. This is great. It’s one of the things that makes him an amazing actor, but it doesn’t work for James Bond.

Despite all the romance, James Bond isn’t a passionate character. He’s cold and calculating at all times. He moves from death to death, killing whoever gets in his way and bedding anyone or anything that will give him a moments respite. No one who truly has passion can do what Bond does. How do you have sex with someone you know you’re just going to have to kill later? No one who has a true depth of feeling does that.

James Bond is a cold Character and I’ve never seen Idris Elba be that cold. Granted, he’s a great actor and maybe he can pull it off, but it would take a lot of work and he would have to suppress a lot of his natural tendencies.
