The great thing about having people you trust to read your stuff while it’s still in production is that they can tell you when you’ve done something stupid. After all, that’s really the reason you let them read stuff you haven’t finished, right? They have opinions you can respect, but not so much that you always listen to them.

They can say things like, “I don’t think that character would light her kitchen on fire.” And you can respond in one of two ways:

You can say: “There are reasons for that, that will come up later.”

Or you can say something like: “Oh, yeah… I was drunk when I wrote that.”

And then you can either fix it or find a way for the character to spend the rest of the book sans-kitchen.
